Hannah Whitty Functional Power Collection
Functional Power represents all that is powerful in a woman, portrayed through strong garment outlines and the utilization of contrasting fabrics. Specifically it is inspired by women during World War II
Functional: - Purposeful, Efficient, Well-designed, Performing
Power: - Authority, Control, Influence, Strength, Energy, Potential
These characteristics were all qualities felt to be vital in reflecting the concept of this collection accurately. Thus, Functional Power became its title
It was an aim to create a functional collection that empowered women whilst wearing it. Having a collection that has elevated necklines, length and intensity of volume creates striking individual silhouettes as well as a cohesive collection. By creating a larger and more solidly constructed garment an automatic sense of strength and power is added. This additional strength and power translates directly to the wearer of the clothes, instantly creating the perception that the wearer has a much stronger bodily form and heightens their presence.
The mood is dark and mysterious and lifted through surprises of contrast. The contrast of fabrics and the colours within them bring excitement. The combination of fabrics such as chunky herringbone tweed with bright patterned silks achieves an elevated aesthetic to the design.

About the Collection
The collection functional power was inspired by the change brought about by the Second World War and the implications specifically directed towards women at this time. Such changes included the instigation of a make do and mend approach, which was used extensively as a basis during the creation of potential new designs for the collection.
The collection aims to portray the change in the perceived image of womankind, resulting from social, economic and political influences bought about by the war. Specifically, it conveys a new found sense of power and strength in the women of the time.
Silhouettes in this collection are cocoon shaped, wrapping around the body adding curvature, height and interest. Using this technique, the collection conveys a new found sense of power and strength in the women of the time. Adaptability and multi-functionality are also prominent features, mirroring a more general mindset displayed by the ever resourceful civilian population of WW2.
Utilising traditional hard-wearing 1940´s tweed wools and combining them delicate bright patterned silks, allows the drawing out of the subtle undertones and highlights within both materials to create exciting fabric combinations. Mixing textures enhances the structure of the designs form further, creating further contrast and interest to the garment.
It is great to have Hannah showing her Functional Power Collection at our FML Evening at Divo Restaurant & Lounge Bar London on Friday 14 August
